The Cultures Behind Fashion Trends

From gladiator sandals to skinny jeans to animal prints – one has to wonder, what influences fashion trends? Where do all of these ideas, some of them great and some downright bizarre, come from and how do they gain so much popular, spreading like wildfire until practically everyone on the planet who can afford it is wearing a particular item? Even if you're not particularly fond of following fashion trends, you have to admit that there's something to be said for a particular style of clothing that can move millions of people around the world to dress in it.

So what influences fashion trends? In a nutshell, fashion trends are made by people for people and are a reflection of human nature and human activities. You wear something as an expression of who you are, what you believe in and where you come from, meaning you are representing a certain kind of fashion culture that you are either a part of or that you want to be a part of.

High Culture

The idea of high culture is synonymous with luxury and a sense of exclusivity. These involve things like painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, literature and the like. What influences fashion trends can be seen in certain famous fashion houses, not only in their clothing lines but in their advertising campaigns too. For example, Gianni Versace's logo is that of Medusa from Greek mythology, a stylized drawing on a golden, medallion-like background, which lends an air of bold artistry to his clothing line, along with a sense of high-end sophistication and glamorous seduction .

Pop Culture

Think the sixties and it's tie-dye and peace medallions, while the seventies was all about the bell bottoms and platform shoes. This is one of the key answers to what influences fashion trends. Pop culture is basically what the media and the press hype up every day you turn on the TV or go online. This is the culture of celebrities and famous personalities whom everyone else wants to look like, and of clothing produced for the masses. For example, if a popular celebrity is photographed wearing a specific coat, sales on that coat are sure to skyrocket as certain popular celebrities are considered global fashion icons and role models. This is why many fashion labels turn to celebrities to endorse their clothing, accessories and footwear. Pop culture sells a certain lifestyle that people want to have and qualities that people want to possess.

Subculture

This is the culture of the "streets," of those considered out of the mainstream, such as the hip-hop, graffiti, rock and punk scenes or the surf and skateboard cultures. If classified simply, this is the more bohemian aspect of fashion, of individualistic and unique styles, like the low-slung, baggy jeans that were primarily connected with the hip-hop scene or graffiti art on sneakers associated with skateboarding. The thing about subculture however is that it tends to turn into pop culture given enough time and attention. What influences fashion trends …

History of Combat Boots And Their Role In Fashion

Combat boots have become much of a common place amongst the military organizations around the world. The first soldiers that were issued them were the foot soldiers of the Assyrians, they wore hobnail boots called caligae.

Soldiers in the English Civil war were issued 3 sets of these special footwear and would change them after every march to be sure that each was worn in evenly. Instead of laces these had buckles that were used by most armies during that period in time.

The Napoleonic wars saw the first set of lace up combat boots and were issued to replace the older buckle shoes. The first issued by the Americans were lace up ankle boots. These however had no left or right shoe. They were instead intended to shape themselves around the soldier’s feet. These boots were both uncomfortable and cause a lot of blisters.

The next official set of US boots came during WWII. They were part of the M-1943 uniform ensemble. With this issue the Americans were back to the double buckled which they would keep until 1948. During the Vietnam War the US was back to lace ups made specifically for jungle warfare.

Current United States combat boots are available in two differing styles. The first is a 2.5 lb temperate weather boot and the second is a 2 lb hot weather. Current manufacturers of United States combat boots include Altama, Bates, Belleville Shoe, McRae, Rocky, Warson, Converse and Wellco. All branches of the military use a tan rough out except the Air Force who uses a foliage green suede.

In recent history combat boots have found a new genre of people looking to buy them outside of the military. With the invasion of the goth, punk, and industrial, kids ones have become much more of a mainstream accessory. They have become a fashion statement for a large portion of the population of American youth.

Many people who choose combat boots for fashion want the real thing which creates an authentic and vintage look and feel. As a result you can buy them at pretty much any military surplus store or online at several different retailers.

Beyond fashion, some people also wear them simply because they are so durable and long lasting. They can be worn for long periods of time in any conditions which makes them ideal for many industries even outside of the military.

History of Fashion – The Origin of the Beanie Hat

The beanie hat, a smaller close fitting hat, that originated in the United States in the early 1900’s. The word “bean”, back in the early 1900’s, was slang for head. In the early 1900’s the hats were worn by mostly college students, and in the 1950’s they were worn by college freshmen as a form of hazing. The beanie hat also became very popular with blue collar workers who wore them not only to keep their head warm, but to keep their hair out of the way, and the hat had no brim to obstruct their work. You can get them either with or without brims. The hats with brims normally have a lot smaller brim than your normal baseball cap. Actually, the baseball cap evolved from the beanie with the brim.

At the time, the beanie hat was not traditionally know to be a fashionable accessory, they were worn more so for necessity. But, with the fashion trends of the 1990’s, the beanie seem to gain more and more popularity. Normally worn by boys, more girls were seen wearing them. Sports figures started wearing them more as well. The college kids were adding their school emblems, colors and, favorite sports teams and logos, making them become part of the norm. In the beginning, the hats were mainly made from wool. Now, you find that they are made not only from wool, but synthetic materials, and fleece. The fleece material keeps away the moisture that the skiers and snowboarders have to deal with, not to mention keeping the head warm.

One style of beanie that was adopted by an artist/fiction writer, Ray Nelson, was the propeller beanie, also known if you wore one as a propeller-head. Shortly after that, the propeller hat was used by a lot of the cartoon characters, and used in comic books. The hat had an actual propeller on the top of it. The propeller beanie fell by the wayside, and in the mid 1970’s the interstellar propeller hat appeared on the scene. This was a multi-colored baseball cap with a propeller on it’s top. Another style that appeared after the propeller hat was the skullcap, which had four to six colored panels sewn together to form the hat. Eventually they started adding short brims and ear flaps to keep the ears warm.

Today it seems that there are numerous styles and colors to choose from. Not only are boys, girls, men and women wearing beanies, but, small children are wearing them as well. You can find just about any color or style you are looking for.

Plus Size Swimwear Designs in Today’s Fashion Industry

Long ago, plus size women had to accept their limitations in the fashion field and their dependence with whatever clothing they could find, or having to make their own clothes such as plus size swimwear. Nowadays, large women want to look good and feel good in ready-made clothes; as a part of fashion industry, plus size clothing becomes popular for many women in all age groups. They too wish to make their style statement and it is heart warming to see real women doing catwalk in some real size fashion shows around the world in plus size swimwear or plus size dresses every year.

Today plus size women don’t have to sneak to a plus size fashion counter at the end of a mall or shopping center. There are boutiques and designers dedicated to plus size fashion wear. Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano lead the trend of showing plus size garments at their fashion shows in 2011. An Italian fashion house has dedicated a week for plus size fashion shows at their annual fashion week in Milan.

More than the color of the fabric or clothing, it is the designs that accentuate plus size figures. A good style in long sleeves or short sleeves top will slim down the top section; a flattering plus size swimwear like one-piece swimming dress with flowing skirt to camouflage big tummy and deep V neck which accentuates the ample bosom.

There are different plus size body shapes but the majority of them are pear shapes with bigger waistline and hips, as compared to smaller upper bodies. This is most commonly found amongst large women; an A-line swimming dress (in plus size swimwear range) with empire waist to enhance the top and conceal the width of the hips would be ideal for this body shape.

The second most common shape (for plus size women) is apple shape. Apple-shaped women are fuller around the top and the middle including their belly. They’re usually larger-busted and their upper arms and shoulders are broader, their legs tend to be slim and their bottoms tend to be flat, in that case they should emphasize their bust and legs while camouflaging their midsection, keeping it all in balance. The main idea is to draw the eye toward the best parts of their bodies; they should wear garments (tops, dresses, plus size swimwear in one-piece or two-piece) which accentuate their bust and which show off their great legs.

Since the plus size fashion (including plus size swimwear) becomes popular beside the revolution of online selling, full-figured women do not even need to go to brick-and-mortal shops to buy their clothes; instead, they can shop and try on the garments at their own homes with the goods delivered to their doors.

Why Vintage Fashion Will Always Be Popular

Retro fashions have seen a strong resurgence in the past couple decades, beginning with the grunge style in the early nineties. Working class rock bands out of cities like Seattle helped launch thrift-store throwback items into the national spotlight. The fashion began as a direct result of economic hardships and nonchalant attitudes in the pop culture movement.

By the late 1990s, thrift-store fashions had gained an eclectic but popular representation in the generation X demographic. Over the past decade, many of these low-budget style choices became the target for high-fashion designers as vintage moved off Main St and onto Fifth avenue.

Vintage Fashion Becomes Mainstream

Many mainstream designers went retro at the turn of the century, bringing back classic looks like pleated corduroy pants from the seventies. Even the bell-bottomed denim look made popular during the hippie era made its way into mainstream department stores.

Today, vintage clothing is associated with unique, classic looks that have stood the test of time. A growing number of national chains specialize in recycled clothing. These stores operate like thrift stores but are highly selective. Instead of following the thrift model of reselling donated clothing, vintage and recycled clothing stores pay substantial fees for unique articles that capture an exotic or nostalgic piece of fashion history.

One iconic designer who demonstrates the value of vintage is Yves Saint Laurent. The designer made straw hats that fetched over $5,000 a piece at Christie’s auction house. A sixties Mondrian mini dress by Laurent sells for well over $10,000.

Why Vintage Styles Will Always Be Around

Outside of high fashion, the thrift store style retains the strong popularity it found in the 1990s. There are a few reasons this fashion trend might never fade away:

  • Recycled clothing is environmentally friendly or “green” which is chic in itself.
  • The experience of hunting for rare and valuable items on discount racks has a treasure-hunt feeling that remains exciting.
  • The bottom line is always an issue too. Vintage clothing is often more affordable than big-box store attire.
  • There is a “scene” for thrift store hunting and vintage connoisseurs. There is a whole movement of social networking, online groups, blogs and other collectives that are dedicated to the vintage fashion culture.

What’s New About Vintage?

One of the predominant changes in the vintage fashion scene over the past decade is the integration of old and new. Many vintage styles are used to exaggerate modern pieces. For example, big sunglasses and classic wind-breaker jackets popping up in modern hip hop music videos and performances.

Today’s vintage clothing includes anything that is two or more decades old. The genre goes all the way back to the 1920s, before which clothing is considered antique. With nearly a century of designs to select from the possibilities are endless.
