Though no gears or clothing can shelter you totally, specially designed gears and clothing can protect you to a great extent.

Gloves can safeguard your hands from intense cold and harms caused by falls. Padded gloves provide protection to your knuckles and gauntlets retains cold air getting in to your sleeves. Snowmobile boots are best to keep feet, ankles and lower part of the legs dry and hot. They prevent the snow from reaching your feet. Most boots come with lining which can be removed for drying.

Bullyland Europasaurus Dinosaur Model Reviewed

Bullyland Prehistoric World Europasaurus Dinosaur Model

It is not often a dinosaur gets named after an entire continent but there are three instances that spring to mind. Firstly, there is Antarctosaurus (although its fossils have not been found in Antarctica), secondly, there is Australovenator, whose fossils do come from Australia and now we have Europasaurus, a long-necked dinosaur from Germany.

Fossils from Lower Saxony

A Dutch amateur fossil collector exploring a limestone quarry in Lower Saxony came across the fossilised remains of approximately a dozen dinosaurs in 1998. It was thought that all the dinosaurs represented babies, as the bodies ranged in size from under two meters long to a fraction over six meters in length. These were herbivorous Sauropods, a group of prehistoric animals that includes the mighty Brachiosaurus, classification and Apatosaurus, yet since these fossilized skeletons were so small it was thought this must be the fossilised remains of a crèche of youngsters. Only when a researcher from the University of Bonn, who was conducting research into how quickly baby Sauropods grew, examined the skeletons was it discovered that the fossils of the larger individuals represented adult animals. A new genus of Late Jurassic Sauropod was established and Europasaurus holgeri came into being. This dinosaur was officially named and described in 2006.

A Miniature Sauropod Dinosaur

The fossils of Europasaurus were found in marine deposits. It seems this small member of the Dinosauria, one of the smallest members of the Sauropoda assigned to date, was a dwarf form. Land cut off from the mainland of Europe formed an island chain about 154 million years ago, the islands continued to shrink as the sea level rose and populations of dinosaurs marooned on these shrinking landmasses had to adapt to environments with fewer resources. Over many generations, the huge, long-necked Sauropods that were the ancestors of Europasaurus evolved into miniature versions. Being smaller these dinosaurs needed less food to sustain them, a good thing when on an island with limited food resources.

The Europasaurus Dinosaur Model

The replica represents the known fossil material well. It shows the longer forelimbs compared to the hind-limbs, so typical of a Brachiosaurid Sauropod. The model has been nicely painted with a light tan color on the flanks with darker stripes and spots – excellent camouflage for a forested environment. The dinosaur model measures around twenty-five centimetres in length so it works well to the scale of other, larger figures representing much larger Sauropod dinosaurs.

Domed Skull of a Brachiosaur

The model makers have been careful to depict their dinosaur model with a domed skull, just like other Brachiosaur replicas made by Bullyland of Germany and it is great to see a German dinosaur being made by a German company.

"Europe's Lizard"

As for being named after a continent, Europasaurus means "Europe's Lizard", a reference to the European fauna known to have existed at the end of the Jurassic geological period. The species name honors the Dutch fossil collector who first found the fossils of …

Why is Birthstone Jewelry So Popular?

Birthstone jewelry is the perfect way to celebrate your birth and the birth of your loved ones, especially your children. Popular for the last two centuries, birthstone jewelry has taken off in the past 50 years in a trend started in France and western Europe and spread to the United States. Note that although birthstone jewelry have been in the scene the last few hundred years, the idea of birthstones traces its origins back to ancient times. The first birthstones were thought to have originated from a breastplate with 12 gemstones each signifying a month of the year in biblical but in fact originated from the idea of astrology signs around 500 B.C during the Greek classical period.

The modern birthstone list has remained unchanged since 1912. In chronological order, the birthstones are Garnet for January, Amethyst for February, Aquamarine for March, White Spinel for April, Emerald for May, Alexandrite for June, Ruby for July, Peridot for August, Sapphire for September, Pink Tourmaline for October, Citrine for November, and Blue Zircon for December.

The most common types of birth stone jewelry are rings and necklaces in the form of pendants and charms with a chain. The rings are made with birthstones set into the crown or on the side. The necklaces are made with birthstones attached on top of the pendants or embedded into the pendants or charms. The birth stones are either natural ones or lab created ones. Lab created ones are also known as simulated birthstones or crystals and they are the most popular version today as evidenced by the commercial success of several Austrian crystal companies. Other popular forms are bracelets, earrings, lockets and watches. All types are personalized with the respective gemstones of your loved ones and some styles and designers will allow you to personalize with names and even birth dates. Walk in Beauty

When my Lakota (aka Sioux) friends and I say our good-bye, whether on the phone or in person, we part with the comment, "Walk in Beauty."

"Walk in Beauty" means – "Beauty before me, beauty behind me, beauty beside me, beauty below me, beauty above me – I walk in beauty."

Walking in Beauty is walking in – Joy, Bliss and Safety. It permeates our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies.

In Incan shamanism, the South direction of the Medicine Wheel contains four practices. These are non-attachment, non-suffering, non-judgment and beauty. Pondering this for a moment, you can understand that if we practice non-attachment, non-suffering and non-judgment, we will arrive at a space where we can walk in beauty.

"Walking in Beauty" is more than a feeling or emotion. It is a state of being that can best be described as grace. In this state of grace called beauty, we accept that everything is – neither good nor bad, and we live in a universe that exists on our behalf.

In examining the other three practices of the South in depth and examine our lives honestly, we realize that our attachments often lead to a great deal of unhappiness. There are many such attachments – to people, careers, money, romantic love, outcomes, possessions, religious practices, keeping up with the neighbors – the list is endless.

All attachments, at some point, inevitably lead us to an awareness, which prompts us to refuse or are unable to accept what is. Non-acceptance eventually leads to pain and suffering, and we fall from grace and forget we are surrounded by beauty. By practicing non-attachment, we eliminate the source of the majority of our suffering. In this life, pain is inevitable – suffering is optional. The key to practicing non-suffering is to stay in the moment, stay in our "Beauty."

To help you to "Walk in Beauty," ask yourself these questions.

o What beliefs do I need to reevaluate / change?

o Who in my past does this person / situation remind me?

o What about this person annoys me?

o What does this person do that I don't like about myself?

o What do I need to change to change my experience?

o What are his / her motivations?

o What are my motives?

o What are my choices?

While the majority of our suffering comes from regret, remorse and guilt about the past or fear of possible future pain, judgment also plays a part. It is astonishing how much time and energy we spend on judging. Not just judging others, but judging what is good and bad about our own lives, and the world around us from our limited perspectives. Our judgments are all based on comparisons made with past pain or pleasure.

Our suffering and judgments not only keep us from the grace of beauty, but they keep us locked in time. When we are locked in linear time, we cannot experience our divinity. One of the greatest joys of walking in …

Fashion History – Clothing of the Middle Ages in Western Europe

The Middle Ages encompasses the time from the Fall of the Roman Empire in 400 CE until the beginning of the Renaissance, around 1500 CE.

Clothing of the Early Middle Ages, or Dark Ages, was basically a tunic and under tunic, both sewn from a cross shaped piece of fabric that was folded and hand stitched. Later, the tunic was cut in two pieces, then four piece for a better fit.

Peasants and serfs made their clothes at home of wool and hemp. The shearing, and cleaning of the wool; the spinning, and weaving was a long drawn out chore before the invention of the spinning wheel and the horizontal loom. But the garment were durable and long lasting. One garment could last a life time.

While the upper classes and aristocracy wore basically the same type of clothing, their under tunics were made of linen which was made for them by workers. Upper class women sewed tunics at home and some were made by professional tailors.

Due to the loss of trade that followed the end of the Roman Empire, trade was minimal, so the importation of fine fabrics was expensive and rare. But finer weaves, borders, and embellishments made for better clothing for the elite.

After the invention of the horizontal loom and spinning wheel, the manufacture of clothing became easier. These technological improvements made finer clothing more available and affordable. The Crusades introduced silk, damask, and other luxurious fabrics and designs into Europe. And when Marco Polo's adventures heralded a new interest in the Far East, trade increased, creating greater availability of textiles, design ideas, and new patterned fabric to Europe.

Clothing worn by the nobility and merchants began to change, introducing the concept of fashion. While the Church dictated certain aspects of dress for modesty, such as veils for women, alterations in the in the types of fabrics used varied the styles that became popular. Women wore veils made of sheer muslin, interwoven with golden threads. Gowns became more ornate with variations in the neckline, sleeves, and hem lengths.

The establishment of guilds and improvements in the manufacture of clothing created an upwardly mobile middle class able to emulate the clothing styles of the upper class. New styles emerged including the elaborate head dresses of the later Middle Ages. The head dresses that looked like horns were wildly popular for a generation, as was the classic fairy tale princess style of hat called a hennin. A hennin was a tall, conical hat worn with a veil, a style much identified with the Middle Ages.

The later Middle Ages saw women's gowns grow trains, and sleeves elongated so that long flaps reached the ground.

The changing of style and middle class interest in emulating the clothing styles of the elite created what we think of today as fashion.
